It is known to be a receptor for vasoactive intestinal polypeptide (VIP), a hormone that is involved in regulating blood pressure and fluid balance in the body. Through its interaction with VIP, ADCYAP1R1 is involved in regulating the activity of endothelial cells in the brain. It is expressed in blood-brain barrier (BBB) endothelial cells, which are responsible for maintaining the blood-brain barrier and regulating the passage of substances between the blood and the brain. ADCYAP1R1 signaling has been shown to be important for the regulation of BBB permeability, inflammation, and angiogenesis in the brain. **Clinical significance:** Mutations in the ADCYAP1R1 gene have been linked to several neurological disorders, including autism spectrum disorder (ASD), schizophrenia, and epilepsy. In mouse models, mutations in ADCYAP1R1 have been shown to cause neurodevelopmental abnormalities, including cognitive impairments and seizures. These findings suggest that ADCYAP1R1 is a potential therapeutic target for neurodevelopmental disorders.
