**Key characteristics:** * PLIN2 is a multi-functional protein that is involved in both macro- and microautophagy. * It is a key regulator of lipid metabolism and is highly expressed in tissues that are involved in energy production, such as muscle and fat cells. * PLIN2 is also involved in the regulation of inflammation and cell death. **Pathways and functions:** * PLIN2 is a key regulator of autophagy. It is recruited to the lysosome in a phosphorylation-dependent manner and then undergoes a conformational change that allows it to interact with the LC3-family of autophagy receptors. * Once bound to LC3, PLIN2 recruits the LC3-family of autophagy receptors to the lysosome, which then fuses with an autolysosome and is degraded. * PLIN2 also plays a role in the regulation of cellular response to glucose starvation. It is expressed in the liver and skeletal muscle and is induced by high-fat diet and fasting. * PLIN2 is also involved in the regulation of inflammation and cell death.
