It is expressed in proliferating cells and is required for the initiation of cell cycle progression. * CREB1 is also expressed in cells that are in the G1 phase of the cell cycle. It is required for the progression of the cell cycle from G1 to S phase. * CREB1 is a key regulator of cell differentiation. It is expressed in cells that are committed to a specific cell fate. * CREB1 is also involved in apoptosis. It is expressed in cells that are about to undergo apoptosis and is required for the activation of caspases, which are enzymes that catalyze the death of cells. **Clinical significance:** CREB1 is a promising target for cancer therapy. Mutations in the CREB1 gene have been linked to a number of human cancers, including breast cancer, lung cancer, and leukemia.
