**Key characteristics:** * GNAQ is a transmembrane protein with a molecular weight of approximately 140 kDa. * It is a member of the G protein family of cell surface receptors. * GNAQ is a ligand for the p2y purinoceptor 1. * It is involved in the regulation of insulin secretion through multiple pathways, including Acetylcholine regulation, Adp signalling, Chaperonin-mediated protein folding, cooperation of PDCL (phlp1) and tric/cct in G-protein beta folding, and free fatty acid regulation. **Pathways and functions:** * GNAQ is a key regulator of insulin secretion. It is a ligand for the p2y purinoceptor 1, which is expressed on the surface of pancreatic beta cells. When GNAQ binds to p2y purinoceptor 1, it activates the receptor and promotes the opening of the channel. This allows the efflux of calcium ions from the cell, which leads to the activation of the G protein beta. The G protein beta then activates the insulin secretion machinery. * GNAQ is also involved in the regulation of inflammation. It is expressed in inflammatory cells, such as macrophages and dendritic cells, and it is involved in the regulation of inflammation through multiple pathways, including the p2y purinoceptor 1 pathway. **Clinical significance:** Mutations in the GNAQ gene have been linked to the development of type 2 diabetes. In these mutations, the protein is either mutated or deleted, which results in a decrease in GNAQ expression. This leads to a decrease in insulin secretion, which can result in high blood sugar levels and the development of diabetes.
