It is primarily a ligand for the G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) follicle-stimulating hormone receptor (FSHR). When FSHB binds to FSHR, it activates the receptor and initiates a cascade of intracellular events. **Clinical significance:** Mutations in the FSHB gene have been linked to several female reproductive disorders, including polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and infertility. In PCOS, elevated levels of FSHB have been shown to disrupt the normal functioning of the ovaries and lead to the development of cysts. FSHB is also a key regulator of fertility in both humans and animals. In infertile women, low levels of FSHB have been linked to ovulation problems. **Conclusion:** FSHB is a critical regulator of female fertility. Its levels are closely correlated with the menstrual cycle, and mutations in the gene have been linked to several female reproductive disorders.
