**Key characteristics:** * HTR5A is a transmembrane protein with seven transmembrane domains. * It is a member of the G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) family. * It is expressed in the central nervous system, particularly in the hippocampus, cerebral cortex, and forebrain. * It is a key regulator of synaptic plasticity and learning and memory. **Pathways and functions:** * HTR5A is a ligand-gated ion channel that is expressed in the plasma membrane of neurons and glial cells. * When HTR5A binds to its ligand, 5-hydroxytryptamine (5HT), it opens the channel and allows sodium ions to flow out of the cell. * This depolarizes the cell and inhibits the activity of postsynaptic receptors. * This inhibition of postsynaptic receptors is thought to be important for learning and memory. **Clinical significance:** * Mutations in HTR5A have been linked to a number of psychiatric disorders, including schizophrenia and autism. * These mutations can lead to an increase in anxiety and fear, as well as problems with learning and memory. * Therefore, HTR5A is a promising target for the treatment of psychiatric disorders. **Additional information:** * HTR5A is a relatively new receptor, and there is still much that is unknown about its function. * However, it is clear that HTR5A is an important player in synaptic plasticity and learning and memory.
